RELINK has located several highly potential locations to include IMAP projects (Integrated Mine Action Projects) site were location permissions can be provided.
According to
EBRD, Renewable Development Initiative
, the most promising renewable energy resources in Croatia appear to be wind and geothermal. Over 150 MW of potential wind projects have been identified for Croatia’s Adriatic islands.
HEP Renewable Energy Sources
, a daughter company of Hrvatska Elektroprivreda, was founded in October 2006 for the purpose of grouping and supporting renewable energy projects.
The Croatian electricity market has been gradually opening and in 2008 it was fully liberalized, which means that
HEP
is not the only company in the market and will therefore not have the obligation to purchase electricity from renewable energy sources. This will be the responsibility of the
Croatian Energy Market Operator, HROTE.
The EU decision to fight climate change and impose the binding target of a 20% share of renewable energies in overall EU energy consumption by 2020 is made by Brussels - European Council, on 09.03.2007. Croatia is presently working on the chapters preparing for EU climate targets.
The sustainable orientation and mitigation of global climate change threats have placed the renewable energy – with the most significant contribution from wind energy – as one of the main objectives of the EU sustainable development strategy.
Though Croatia has significant natural resources of wind energy, especially in mountain regions, the current wind energy production share is out of harmony with the Union’s initiative and the growing amount of interested Croatian and international stakeholders showing interest in wind farms and wind energy in Croatia and the region.
In order to contribute to the national wind energy potential assessment and reduce the meteorological uncertainties related with the wind energy exploitation, the
Meteorological and Hydrological Service METEO
, address the objectives to estimate wind climate of Croatia and to identify the best options for implementation of the next generation site-specific short-range wind forecasting system in complex terrain of Croatia.
The project results are envisaged to stimulate synergies between national research and industry communities. In this way, the METEO will provide new options for the sustainable economic growth of Croatia and make a contribution to the national step forward towards joining the leading position of EU on the global renewable energy market.
Large-scale use of renewable energy sources has its difficulties and constraints – volatility and unpredictability of sources, low efficiency and high prices.
However, all of the constraints and difficulties can be overcomed by performing a careful site selection, measurements and studies, proper and professional selection of equipment, and by using incentive prices for purchase of electricity from renewable sources, applied by Croatia since 2008, and good planning.
Wind studies have been completed on several site locations as part of completing the Croatian spatial county and municipality development plans in 2008.
